Roger Federer to Retire Before Tokyo Olympics 2021?
Roger Federer is currently recovering from surgery and his absence from the court has sparked the rumors that he is going to retire before Tokyo Olympics 2021. As a reminder, the Summer Olympics were supposed to take place this summer but due to the coronavirus pandemic, they were postponed to 2021.
The Swiss tennis legend who turns 39 during the Olympic Games this summer had to undergo a surgery to deal with a knee injury that used to bother him a lot. Although doctors are confident that he’s going to recover fully, not many actually believe he’s going to return to his former glory. In fact, many believe that 2020 is going to be the final year of his professional career.
Still, in a recent interview, Federer has said he’s very confident he will be back on the court in summer. In fact, the 20-time Grand Slam winner is planning to challenge another Grand Slam title.
Wimbledon 2020 has been canceled, so Federer will have to wait for the next year if he wants to try to add another title to his collection. So far, he has won a record eight titles at the All England Club. In addition, there are two other Grand Slams to be played this year, namely the French Open and the US Open.
Roger Federer at Tokyo Olympics?
Even though he is confident he is going to be fully fit to get back to the court in summer, the Swiss player is not going to be a favorite for winning the 2020 French Open.
The tournament at the Stade Roland Garros is something Federer hasn’t been very successful. Over the course of his more than two-decades-long professional career, he’s won it just once.
His only title came in 2009 when he managed to put a brief stop to Rafael Nadal’s dominance. The King of Clay has won the French Open on 12 occasions so far. Once again, the Spanish player is the biggest favorite for winning the 2020 tournament.
Federer to Retire in 2020?
The year started fairly well for Federer. He managed to reach the semi-final stage of the 2020 Australian Open, where he got eliminated by Novak Djokovic. The Serbian player then went on to win the tournament.
In Melbourne, Federer recorded his 100th Australian Open victory with a win in round three. We also saw Federer playing some physically demanding matches like the ones against Millman and Sandgren, both of which lasted for five sets.
What’s strange is that even though he’s in his late thirties, Federer didn’t seem to lack stamina. On the contrary, he did very well physically. Actually, that was one of the main reasons why he won both of those matches.
His performance at the 2020 Australian Open is the main argument in the discussion about his retirement. Considering that he’s physically capable of playing at a high level, the question is why would he decide to retire?
