Leicester City at Liverpool Betting Preview (November 21)
Leicester City is at the top of the Premier League table ahead of Round 9. The Foxes are taking on Liverpool, the reigning champion of English soccer. The Reds, however, are just a single point behind Leicester, so a win on Saturday could propel them to the very summit of the table. The trouble is that they are going to be without several key men in the Leicester City at Liverpool game, including two center-backs Virgil Van Dijk and Joe Gomez.
Considering that Liverpool hasn’t been great in defending this season, Leicester City has every right to hope for a good result. As a reminder, the Reds have allowed 16 goals in 8 games this season, which is better than only two teams in the league – Leeds and West Brom – both of which have conceded 17 goals.
- Date: Saturday, November 21
- Time: 11 am (EDT)
- Place: The Anfield in Liverpool
The Long List of Liverpool’s Absentees
Arguably the best defender, Virgil Van Dijk, has been out for weeks now. He’s on a road to recovery, but will not be able to take part in the Leicester City at Liverpool game.
The Dutchman picked up an injury in the Merseyside Derby (Liverpool vs Everton) in October and has been out since. Liverpool played three Premier League games without him, allowing a goal in each one of those.
The reason why they didn’t concede even more goals is that other defenders did well in those game. The problem is that ahead of the Leicester City at Liverpool match, a few other defenders have picked up injuries.
Joe Gomez got himself injured during a practice with the England National Team and will be out. This means that Liverpool’s boss Jurgen Klopp is going to have to come up with makeshift solutions in his team’s center-backs’ area. Joel Matip is currently the only first-team center-back who is available.
This is why Klopp will probably have to go with Nathaniel Phillips, a young defender, who’s played only one game for Liverpool in his entire professional career.
Liverpool Boss Worried About Too Tight Schedule
Speaking of Klopp, the German was really angry at the Premier League officials after the 1:1 draw with Manchester City, following injury problems his players sustained. He believes that the schedule is too tight, which is getting the players more tired and more prone to injuries.
Klopp’s assessment of the situation came after his first-choice right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold got injured in that game. The English international is another player Klopp will not be able to count on in the Leicester City at Liverpool game.
On top of everything, two more defensive midfielders are probably going to have to miss this game or, at least, start it from the bench. The guys in question are Thiago Alcantara and Fabinho.
Is There a Cure for Liverpool’s Defensive Problems?
This season, Liverpool have already conceded 16 goals, which is worse than 17 other teams. Furthermore, this team has conceded at least a goal in every single Premier League game they’ve played since September. One of those games was the one against Aston Villa, which Liverpool lost by 7:2.
With such stats, Liverpool definitely does not seem like a team that could prevent Leicester City from scoring. What gives them confidence, however, is that they managed to keep a clean sheet against Atalanta in the Champions League.
Still, Leicester City is a tougher team than Atalanta, not to mention that the Foxes have been in brilliant form lately. The result of that is that Leicester City is not at the very top of the table.
The man the most responsible for this achievement is their top-scorer Jamie Vardy. Even though he’s turning 34 in a few months’ time, Vardy might be having the best season of his career.
With 8 goals in the same number of games, he’s sharing the Premier League top-scorer place with Tottenham’s Son, Everton’s Calvert-Lewin, and Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah.
Leicester City at Liverpool Betting Prediction
This is going to be a close one, as both teams have a lot of attacking power. Liverpool might be better, but this team is having serious problems at the back. That’s something Vardy and his teammates will likely take advantage of.
Leicester City will score, the question is whether they can score more than Liverpool?
If you’re not too confident, the solution is to stick with goals. We should see goals on both ends, probably more than 2.5 in total.
When it comes to soccer player props, Jamie Vardy looks destined to score in this game.
