Club America vs Guadalajara Chivas is one of the biggest rivalries in the world of soccer. Nicknamed El Super Clasico (The Super Classic) and El Clasico de Clasicos (The Classic of Classics), this is the clash between the two most successful clubs in Mexico.

As in many, many previous seasons, the two rivals are competing for the title in the 2020 Liga MX Apertura, with the team from the Mexican capital currently doing a bit better. Club America vs Guadalajara Chivas Rivalry

Club America and Guadalajara Chivas are the two most successful clubs in Mexico, as well as the only two clubs that have never been relegated to the second tier of Mexican soccer.

Not only are these two teams big rivals on the pitch, but off the pitch as well. It’s fair to say that their fans don’t like each other very much, as evident from the various instances of brawls in the past, such as the Riot of 1983 (La Bronca del ‘83).

There are several reasons why the two clubs don’t like each other, starting from the fact that they represent two rival Mexican cities. Club America is based in the country’s capital, Mexico City, where it plays its home games at one of the largest stadiums on the planet, Estadio Azteca.

Guadalajara Chivas, as its name suggests, is a club based in the city of Guadalajara, in the state of Jalisco. The metropolitan area of Guadalajara is the second-most populous metropolis in the country, just behind the capital area.

The word Chivas is actually the nickname of the club, which translates from Spanish as “kids” or “youngsters.” The same word, however, is also used to describe goats. This animal is the club’s mascot. The club’s official name, however, is Club Deportivo Guadalajara S.A. de C.V..

According to research from 2016, Guadalajara Chivas is the most popular club in Mexico, with 44.2% of all Mexican soccer fans rooting for this team. Wanna take a guess at what is the second most popular team in the country? Of course, it’s Club America.

Another polarizing difference between the two Mexican soccer giants is the ownership. Club America is owned by Grupo Televisa, a media company famous for its soap operas.

Las Chivas, on the other hand, is owned by a Jalisco-based multi-level marketing company called Grupo Omnilife. The company is a Mexican version of Herbalife Nutrition, both in terms of products it works with and in terms of controversies surrounding its dietary supplements. Of course, the main difference between the two companies is that Grupo Omnilife is not as successful as its American rival.

Foreign Mercenaries vs Mexico’s Own

Guadalajara Chivas is the only club in Mexico that doesn’t have any foreign players. The club’s policy is not to sign any foreigners, but to focus on local talent instead. As a result, this club is in the same situation as Athletic Club in Spanish La Liga – they cannot spend big money to bring top-quality players from abroad.

Club America, on the other hand, do have such luxury. The result is that the six most-valuable players in this team are foreigners.

2020 Super Clasico Preview

The two most expensive players from Club America are Paraguayan defender Bruno Valdez and Chilean forward Nicolas Castillo. Both of these guys will have to miss the 2020 Super Clasico due to injuries. Luckily for Club America fans, in the absence of their biggest stars, other guys have stepped up.

The team captain, right-back Paul Aguilar has been very good and so has been the oldest player in the team, Guillermo Ochoa, who’s their first-choice goalkeeper. Over in the final third, Federico Vinas and Henry Martin have been absolutely flawless so far in the 2020 Apertura.  

Thanks to the fabulous form of Club America’s attackers, this team is currently at the very top of the Liga MX table, with the highest number of goals scored so far. Their rival, Deportivo Guadalajara Chivas has not been too great in the attacking department.

Not scoring many goals is pretty strange for Chivas as this team has some really top-class forwards. Jose Macias, the 20-year-old attacker, for example, is the most expensive player in the league, who’s already caught the eye of scouts from many big European clubs.

In recent times, Club America has been the dominant team in Mexican soccer, winning various trophies in the 2010s. However, they did lose the 2020 Copa Por Mexico Semifinal to their arch-rival.

The game was played on July 16, and it saw a total of seven goals. Chivas won the match, despite Club America chasing a draw until the very final moment.
